From Marketeer to QA: Daniel Carvalho’s Career Journey

What makes someone leave their Marketing position to pursue Quality Assurance?

Personally, I made that decision due to the lack of opportunities in the Marketing field. Not only it evolved rapidly since I graduated, thanks to social media and digital marketing’s growing relevancy, I ended up working in projects that didn’t allow me to gain the necessary know-how to stay in the field. Quality Assurance came up through a suggestion from a family member that works in QA and sold me the idea. I liked the possibility of testing software, report bugs and improve software. Today, I’m absolutely sure that it was the best decision I could’ve made for my professional career!

What was your biggest challenge as a QA?

So far, my biggest challenge has been connecting testing to programming. I don’t have that technical background in programming and automation which ends up making things a little bit harder to switch from functional testing to automation, as well as understanding the logic behind software, the origin of a bug, among other situations that require that type of tech skills!

Which advice would you give to someone that’s considering pursuing Quality Assurance as a career

My best advice would be to be patient as it’s a field that requires to process a lot of information and that is okay to take time to feel comfortable as QA. The IT industry presents a lot of opportunities and you can learn new things every day. Don’t let frustration get to you when you don’t understand something at first, power through it, it’s perfectly natural!

Do you guys actually inflict emotional damage to developers?

Nope, not at all! Devs love QAs and how we tell them in the nicest possible way ‘your code is not right’.

What do you still want to achieve as a QA?

Right now, my main goal is to properly learn automation and excel automatic tests as I’m already comfortable with functional testing.
